Year 9 Science Term 3 2022

Asalamu Alaikum respected parents, guardians, and students at Irfan college,

It has been an awe-inspiring term for year 9, studying the ‘Medicine of the Prophet’ topic.

With genuine and intense curiosity, students explored the world of microorganisms, the importance of hygiene, the advent of antibiotics and vaccines and the human body’s three lines of defense against pathogens. Our blooming science students worked arduously in groups and conducted a series of first-hand investigations to test various factors such as temperature and the different amounts of sugars that affect the growth of yeast-an amazing microorganism used in making bread! These practical experiences allowed students to utilize and refine their ‘working scientifically’ skills. Lastly, we wrapped up this term by studying the role of the nervous and endocrine system in coordinating a response to changes in its environment.

Alhumdulilah through Allah’s blessing and mercy, we have shared many wonderful experiences this term. Some of our highlights include:

•             making onion skin cell slide to view under the microscope,

•             investigating the growth of yeast in the lab

•             Science Week 2022 escape room:  Breaking Glass news

•             making physical 2D models of neurons using arts and craft materials.
