Year 9 Science T1 2021

Posted by Ms Nancy El assaad on 12 April 2021
Asalamualaikum respected parents and students at Irfan college,

It has been a fruitful first term in Year 9 Science, studying the 'Medicine and Microbiology' topic. With genuine and intense curiosity, students explored the world of microorganisms, the importance of hygiene, the advent of antibiotics and vaccines and the human body's three lines of defence against pathogens. Our blooming science students worked arduously in groups and conducted a series of first-hand investigations to test various factors such as temperature and the different amounts of sugars that affect the growth of yeast-an amazing microorganism used in making bread! These practical experiences allowed students to utilise and refine their much needed 'working scientifically' skills. Lastly, we wrapped up this term by studying the role of the nervous and endocrine system in coordinating a response to changes in its environment.

Alhumdulilah through Allah's blessing and mercy, we have shared many wonderful experiences this term. Some of our highlights include making onion skin cell slide to view under the microscope, testing our reflexes and making physical 2D models of neurons using arts and craft materials.

Well done, Year 9 on your brilliant efforts!!
