Asalamualaikum respected parents and students at Irfan college,
This term Year 12 Biology students have completed Module 6 – Genetic Change. In this unit we have thoroughly examined the natural and human-induced causes and effects of genetic change, including mutations, environmental pressure and uses of biotechnology.
Our students successfully completed a Research Depth Study task which involved 5 hours of ongoing research of recombinant DNA technology and its applications in agriculture, medicine and industry. Towards the end of the term, we finalised the module by exploring in detail how population genetics can be used to identify trends, and patterns to:
- determine inheritance of diseases/disorders,
- aid in conservation management and
- map out human evolution.
Alhumdulilah through Allah’s blessing and mercy, we have shared many wonderful experiences this term. Our biggest highlight this term was engaging in a genetic engineering workshop held by Stem Reactor. In this half day workshop, students explored a range of biological techniques used to genetically transform Ecoli bacteria with a green fluorescent protein. They also engaged in preparing multiple samples for an electrophoresis analysis of Sickle Cell Anaemia. From this activity students were able to test and identify which sample contained the genetically inherited disease.
Well done, Year 12 on your brilliant efforts! Ramadan Mubarak and I pray that you gain spiritually and physically throughout this blessed month and return next term with vigor and enlightenment.
Warmest regards,
